Surrender | Listen | Obey

There is an opportunity here to have God shape our hearts as individuals, as families, and as a community to trust Him more deeply, to obey Him more courageously, and to listen to His every prompting. You are being invited into a sacred space with God to process what He is calling you to. We encourage you to surrender, listen, and obey, and promise that God will be faithful when you enter this space with Him. Below are suggestions for entering into that space. This is not meant to be prescriptive, but to provide an outline for you to use in your quiet time. It may be helpful to journal as you go through the steps of surrender, listen, and obey.

SURRENDER: CREATING SPACE FOR GOD

What are areas in your life where you are completely SURRENDERED to God? What are the areas that you find difficult to surrender to God? What obstacles do you encounter?

Time, Treasure, Talents Inventory

STEP ONE:

On a sheet of paper, make a list of all the assets you have: time, treasure, and talents.

  • Time: Where do you invest your time? Where do you focus your attention?

  • Treasure: What tangible resources do you possess?

  • Talents: What unique knowledge, abilities, and talents do you have?

STEP TWO:

Take some time to pray over this list. Thank God for what He’s given you. Pray a prayer of SURRENDER, acknowledging that God’s plan for your time, treasure, and talents is far above your plan.

STEP THREE:

To SURRENDER, you need deep trust in God.

Reflect on these questions.

  • What are the things that you most easily surrender to God?

  • Has God prompted you at all while writing this list or while praying?

  • Are you willing to follow His promptings to grow your faith and trust

LISTEN: HEAR GOD CLEARLY

Think about hearing God. Have you ever had trouble listening for direction from Him or from others? To follow God, we must deliberately make time and create space to listen to Him. We have to really listen for His voice to know how He wants us to move. In theory, listening is an easy task. But sometimes it’s the hardest step. Focusing on God amidst our busy lives can be a challenge, but the reward is truly worth it.

  1. During this time, focus on staying in the stillness:

  2. Get away from distraction to be alone with God.

  3. Set aside time specifically to hear from God.

  4. Choose an environment that is meaningful for you.

  5. Start by thanking God for everything He’s given you.

  6. Ask Him to fill the space you’re in. Quiet yourself. Listen.

In the busyness of our world and in our desire to jump to action, active listening can often feel too passive. But it isn’t. It is a proactive precursor to a bold move. Focus your energy on staying in the stillness, on lingering in the listen. Draw your attention to God.

When the time is over, take notes of what you heard from God or journal if that’s helpful for you.

If you’re comfortable with it, feel free to share with a spouse, family member, or close friend to process it some more.

OBEY

MOVE IN FAITH: Anxiety, fear, and joy—when God calls you to make a bold move, they will come. If you surrender and listen to God’s prompting, you have a choice about what happens next. Will you overcome your fears and anxiety by making a move and following Him, OR will you give in to fear and “stay in the boat”? The choice to trust God and make a move to OBEY Him isn’t a one-time decision. Time and time again, we will be called to make moves of obedience in our lives.

God,

You are my Provider. Everything I have is from You. You are the Giver of every possession, talent, or gift that I possess (James 1:17).

And I trust You to supply and resupply for all of my needs (Philippians 4:19).

You are my loving Father. I live in peace knowing that You watch over me and care intimately about my life (Matthew 6:25–34).

You are my Protector. You guide me, and I take refuge in Your power and care (Psalm 46).

Now, prayerfully commit to make your move in faith by following God’s prompting. Ask God for His peace and joy, which come from following His will (John 15:9–11).

We have listened to God. We’ve moved in obedience to what He’s asked. Now we get to see how He will move to use our gifts to bless our community. My hope for you is that, as you move into the future, there are no regrets for you, just joy in knowing that together we are moving in faith, following God, and building something redemptive with God that will outlast all of us.
